UVA and UVB are the two types of ultraviolet light from the sun. UVB affects your outer layer of skin (epidermis), but UVB triggers the release of melanin, which is a brown pigment.

What does sunscreen do to prevent burning, and will it prevent a tan?

Tanning is just pre sunburn so yes the objective of sunscrean is to screan out all harmful effects of the sun. Tanning is harmfull!!! even the slightest.

look for a sunscrean with titanium dioxide.

It depends on the type of sunscreen you buy. If you buy one with a small number (like 5), then you allow more UVA and UVB rays on your skin which causes a tan.

If you use 100 SPF, then yes.

If 3-45, no.

I use 45 in the summer, but never use anything less that 15! [This includes those crappy little SPF 8 things.]
