Are oranges called 'oranges' because they are orange colored? Or is the color 'orange' called orange based off the fruit?

I don't know why people think this is a stupid question. The color is named after the fruit.

The orange came to Europe via Spain, and the word "orange" comes from the old french orenge, which in turn came from the spanish "naranja". The original word for the fruit comes from the Sanskrit word narangah, meaning orange tree.

PS the Orange, in William of Orange, aka William III of England, is named after a place in Holland and is totally unrelated.

This is like which came first, the chicken or the egg.

Oranges originated in southeast Asia and were called narang.

The colour is named after the orange fruit. Before this was introduced to the English-speaking world, the colour was referred to (in Old English) as geoluhread, which translates into Modern English variously as yellow-red, yellowred, or yellored (all pronounced the same).

The orange is only that colour when it ripens. When they are pick for transport to the market they are still green, therefore they should be called "greens". But we have called the fruit after it's ripened colour "orange". I do think this is in English only.
