If you constantly feel that you can't sleep, there's a number of possibilities.

1. Maybe you stay up too late on the weekends, past the time that you try to fall asleep on during the school days. Your body has an internal clock. If you keep "programming" it to fall asleep later than you want to by going to sleep later in the night on other days, then your body will fall asleep when your internal clock tells it to....if that makes sense.

2. Maybe you're stressed. Do you have a constant train of thought when you're trying to go to sleep? I mean...is your mind always busy at this time? Just try to let go. Take some long, deep breaths, and push those re-occuring thoughts out of your head. Maybe yoga would help...

3. Make yourself comfortable. Although it isn't healthy, it is a lot easier to get to sleep if you have a fully stomach. Eat. :)

I hope I could help a bit.

I had trouble sleeping a while ago, would take one tylonol PM about 8 or 9 o'clock, these didn't MAKE me tired, but when I went to bed at 10:30 or 11, I went right to sleep! Also as mentioned before the relaxation thing, think about relaxing every muscle in your body, and then clear you mind, try not to think about anything!

Warm/hot milk at bedtime. Cut down on caffeine (chocolate and coffee). Try drinking chamomile tea or consider herbal sleep remedies like Nytol Herbal or Kalms (yes, they do work as I found out when I took some during the day to calm my nerves after a stressful commute; ended up dozing off at my desk!)

Shag until you are so puffed you fall asleep, or try reading the bible, that always makes me sleepy.

Really you need to find what works best for you, many of the answers below are a good start, try a few of the techs, but if you want long term happiness and good health forget the meds, they are just a quick fix and will eventually stop working for you.

Find your happy place, good luck & sweet dreams.

Lay down and concentrate on relaxing one part of your body at a time, like your feet first, then your legs, your thighs, your stomach and back, all the way up to your head, and your thoughts. Think about a time you were relaxed while you do this. Read a book....If all else fails, an OTC sleep aid should help. It is basically benadryl (diphenhydramine).

Lunesta 3mg worked wonders for me, but not everyone likes to take prescription meds. I have a cd with ocean sounds that is very soothing and the rhythm of the waves helps you get into a relaxed state.

I read in a health magazine that if you're having difficulty in sleeping, there's another trick to counting sheeps. While you're lying in bed, preparing to snooze off, try to imagine that your body is covered with eyes. Yes, eyes. Then imagine that one by one, the lids are slowly closing. Start from your toes, rising slowly to your head. The biggest eye in your forehead. imagine that it's getting really sleepy until it'll finally close. Just try this trick. There isn't any harm anyway.

I have this weird technique where (don't laugh) if you're lying in the couch or in bed late at night, all ready for bed (ie tv off etc), close your eyes and force yourself to open them after they've been closed a few seconds. then let our eyes close again, then open. If i do this for a minute, usually my eyes are so heavy i just have to go to sleep!

Insomnia (sleeplessness) is due to stress, dietary and medical
problems. By making small lifestyle changes like having a fixed
daily routine, relaxing and eating properly, insomnia can be
cured. I found the information at http://tinyurl.com/jfzpz useful
for getting sleep.
