There is a strong possibility that you will have passed on the genes responsible for Bipolar Disorder to your kids. This is NOT the same as them becoming bipolar themselves. It is believed to take external factors to trigger the disorder, so your kids may be lucky.

There's a chance with all mental issues that they can be passed on. But no one knows for sure what the chances for any specific disorder are. However is your family has a history of mental illness it's more likely that your child with develop any mental illness. My grandmother is a paranoid schizophrenic but neither my father or aunt is. However my aunt does have anxiety problems and is an alcoholic. On my mother's side none of my aunts or uncles have any mental disorders...but almost every single one of my cousins (about 7 of them) have some type of depression or anxiety problem. I'm the only one with bipolar though. There's really no way to know...but I would suggest that you don't make you decision based solely on this. I have a daughter and I'm glad she's here even if she does end up with a mental disorder. Mental illness is no longer a death sentence and a life with problems is usually better than no life at all. I'm glad my parents gave me the chance to prove I'd be a good person even against all genetic odds.

Bipolar has a genetic component and being as this disorder affects a very small percentage of the population, it is a recessive gene, which means both parents would need to carry that gene in order to produce a child with bipolar disorder. The chances of your child having it are relatively low, although there are other social, family history and background and environmental factors that can aggravate and influence a full blown episode. You, your niece, your siblings and your offspring are genetic carriers as you carry this genetic component. Even in the case of two parents carrying a recessive gene, there's still a 50/50 chance the offspring will be bipolar.

Yes, that condition is generally passed down in the genetic sequence.

No one is quite sure which piece of the human genome it rides in on, but there's lots of research with Bipolar Disorder and within about 10-15 years I'm sure the field will take massive strides and be able to isolate the gene.

Once the gene is isolated, then intervention can be brought about with gene therapy.

Until then, there's excellent medications available to quell the symptoms and millions of people have been able to lead healthy and happy lives.

I'm happy to see someone concerned about this in their future offspring. That's quite responsible and you deserve to be commended.

two things to think about:

1.) although the exact cause or origin of bipolar is still undetermined, there is strong evidence which appears to point to genetics. usually, it is pass down through the mother's side.

2.) there are environmental influences also. environment isn't going to cause bipolar per se. however, if you raise your child, your child models your behavior, and can ultimately share same behavioral patterns and pick up some of the same habits. in other words, your child is learning about life and how to deal with situations by watching you. there may be times that you are unable to deal with situations appropriately and your child may see you and adopt this way for himself/herself, but that doesn't mean that he/she has bipolar.

it is possible....just to be on the safe side, if you see signs and symptoms, just have him/her evaluated by a professional. good luck!!

Yes it runs in families but look at it this way, at least you'll know early so that your child can get the help that you didn't get. I know for me, growing up was hard because no one knew that I had it. I didn't get help until I was 27 years old. My mother has it and my younger sister has it too.
Good luck

unfortunatly yes bipolar disorder as well all mental disorders get passed through to other family members. but not to all of them. its weird but only certain members get it and it will pass others. why we don't know but if your concerned have your child tested as soon as possible, the doctors will have more answers then us!
