My dentist told me to floss, so I do, but should I floss up and down? Because it seems to me that that movement might actually pushes food lower down the teeth. Or do I go side to side? but how do I know I'm going far enough then?

I wrap the floss ENTIRELY around my tooth & gently work down as I work in "circles." My dentist thought this was a grand idea! It really gets everything out--just don't be "harsh" on your gums. That could "push" the food below the gum line.

It is imperative that you floss correctly. Wrap the floss around the side of each tooth forming a "C" aournd the side of the tooth and rub it up under the gumline all the while maintaining contact. Never force the floss under the gumline. The whole idea behind flossing and brushing is to have mechanical motion (rubbing motion) which removes plaque and debri. You will know when you go far enough because you feel a natural "stopping point". Never force the floss or you can injure your gum tissue.
