Shank or Butt?? When you get a whole ham it is both? I am trying to make a good ham. I had a few spirals but wasn't a big fan...

It depends on the BRAND of ham that you get; although my family has never had anything less than a whole ham simply because of our size. I would suggest *STRONGLY* a Virginia Baked ham. If you would like some fixings for it, use whole cloves, punctured through the skin of the ham, as added flavor (remove before consuming). We also dress up our hams with pineapple and a secret ingredient... a can of 7-UP. Delicious!

If you buy the whole ham you are getting both shank and butt. Butt is a lot more meaty than the shank portion.

I like the butt portion. But with the whole ham, yes you do get both.
Spirals have grown on me. And I tried a true salt cured country ham. I LOVED IT!!!!
