Morgan, I feel your pain. I suffer from panic disorder myself and continue to have more than my fair share of bad reactions to stress!

A lot of folks here mentioned deep breathing as a way to calm down. It can be helpful, but I advise learning how to breathe correctly first, as this technique can cause you to hyperventilate if it's not done correctly.

What helps me most is exercise. It actually only takes about five minutes or so of movement to work off stress--do 50 pushups or situps, or go for a quick brisk walk...you get the idea. Even a gentle head-to-toe stretch will relax me almost as much as taking a Xanax would. But if you set up a regular workout program for yourself, you will probably find yourself able to manage your overall stress much better after a couple of weeks or so. You'll reap the cardiovascular benefits as well!

Just remember--if your stress starts to produce a lot of distressing physical, mental, and/or emotional symptoms, or if it interferes with work, relationships, hobbies, etc., it's time to see your doc.

Good luck.

if you are in a stressful situation if at all possible try to get yourself isolated for a moment and take some slow deep breaths and you will be able to cope with the situation a little better. also if you get into a regular routine of walking when you are not working etc you'll find that it will improve your stress levels. meditation is another good stress releaser.

Deep breathing excersises are an excellent way to relax. Just breathe in through your nose at a slow pace, and slowly exhale through your mouth. Make sure you fill your lungs and fully empty them with each breath in and out. A person cannot be relaxed and anxious at the same time. It may not be easy to do at first, but as you do it more, it becomes a lot easier.

I've found that playing my fears out to the worst POSSIBLE conclusion regardless of their probability helps me to either see the reality of the situation I'm worrying over nothing or come up with a plan of what I would do if that situation would ever arise.

I've found planning for things that stress me out allows me to stop worrying about them because I have a plan now.

I saw this trick on one of those tattoo reality T.V. shows, and it really works!!! Try saying HU to yourself really softly. This technique works fine in both your head or out loud. the hu sounds like stew and it harmonizes your mind the with sweetest vibrations. You should also say it in your preferred volume and pitch.

Take a couple of deep slow breaths and then go for a quick brisk walk to clear your head. It works for me.
