I would suggest trying the good 'ole fashioned Toll House Chocolate Chip cookie recipe. Go buy a bag of Nestle Toll House chocolate chips. Buy all the ingredients it has on the back of the bag. Do exactly as it says but here are a few tips. Buy sweet cream butter. Not margarine, not Crisco. Sometimes sweet cream butter is labeled as unsalted butter. Whichever... just get butter without salt. :) The trick to this is to make sure the butter is room temperature. It is so much easier to work with than if it's slightly cold and I think it makes the cookies a bit "fluffier". I know that sounds weird but... :)

Start with the butter at room temperature, add the brown sugar and the regular sugar. Add the eggs and pure vanilla extract. Important note- don't skimp. Make sure you buy pure vanilla extract. Once you have mixed the butter, sugars, eggs, and vanilla together you should not see any butter chunks at all. It should be a nice creamy mess. :) Then add the salt, baking soda, and flour. You want to add this in slowly. This gets tough as you add more of the flour mix. The dough will be very stiff. Add the chocolate chips last. Nuts are optional. Add them now if you're going to use them.

Bake on 375 degrees for 8 to 10 minutes. Check on them at 8 minutes. If they don't look golden brown, cook a minute or two longer. Keep an eye on them and don't let them burn. Good luck.

Christmas Star Sugar Cookies
These pretty little cookies keep well and are dead easy to make. The mixture makes loads so they are ideal batch baking biscuits, making around 60 average sized biscuits.
If very pale, the cookies will be soft in texture and if golden they will be a crispy texture. They are delicious plain but can be sandwiched together with jam or iced. If the kids are doing the baking make sure the tag includes the reassurance that the biscuits were 'made with love and clean hands by Jack'
•Â¾ cup sugar
•125g butter
•1 egg
•Â½ cup sour cream
•2 tbsp lemon juice
•Zest of one lemon
•1 tsp baking powder
•4 - 5 cups flour
•Castor sugar for sprinkling
•Silver balls to decorate
Cream the butter and sugar, add the egg and sour cream then stir in the lemon juice and zest. Stir in the flour and baking powder and knead the mixture adding more flour if required to make a firm rollable dough.
Chill for half an hour, then roll out and cut into stars using a variety of star cutters. Sprinkle with castor sugar and press a silver ball into the middle of each.
Bake at around 180°C for 10 - 12 minutes. Smaller stars will cook more quickly.
You can ice the biscuits or dip in chocolate, make patterns from the silver balls or pipe with an icing bag.

Christmas cookies are basically sugar cookies. Using christmas shape cookie cutters, christmas color icings and other sprinkles and designs.

Ingredients:

1/3 cup butter or margarine, softened
1/3 cup shortening
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking powder
pinch salt
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
2 cups all-purpose flour
granulated sugar, colored if desired

Directions:

Beat butter and shortening thoroughly with an electric mixer or pastry cutter.

Add sugar, baking powder and a pinch of salt and mix until well combined.

Beat in egg and vanilla then as much flour as you can with the electric mixer.

Stir in the remaining flour.

Cover and chill for at least 1 hour;

Split the dough in 1/2 and roll one half at a time. Cut out with Valentine cookie cutters.

Keep the piece you aren't using in the fridge.

Bake on ungreased cookie sheets for about 7 to 8 minutes, until edges are firm and bottoms are lightly browned (don't over cook).

Everything in my house is cooked at 325 degrees F and these are no exception *laugh*

Makes 36 cookies.

(there are ready made icing in various colors you can buy, they come in tubes big and small)

You can find a wealth of recipes out there on the web. Try allrecipes or foodnetwork. But if this is your first time, go easy. Try ones with basic ingredients. Try some whipped shortbread or easy cut-out sugar cookies. You can decorate these and personalize them, that can be as easy as sprinkling colored sugar on them, which you'll find in the baking section. Y
You may want to try some easy candy, melt white or chocolate almond bark and make some covered pretzels or peanuts. I make hundreds of cookies this time of the year, just wrapped up my last batch. My suggestion is to have at least 4 cookie sheets. You never want to put cookie dough on warm or hot sheets, have two in and two out, once the ones out cool down prepare you next batch. Also bake on parchment paper! You'll rarely burn anything when you use it. And unless the recipes calls for a lower temp, bake at 325, even if it says 350, trust me and use a timer so you don't forget!!

this is my area of expertise, i can give you a recipe but here's a little secret. if the person you're cooking them for doesnt know the difference between cookies made from scratch and the premade package dough cookies, buy the premade sugar cookie dough follow the directions. these usually bake about 10min give or take.
Note: when the cookies look brown around the egdes take them out of the oven. the cookies are done. Dont wait till they become completly brown because then you've burned them. if you want to feel like you actually made them then buy the cookie dough mix and follow those directions along with the hints i just gave you. here is a simple recipe anyway though.
Holiday Cookies. 2 sticks of butter, 1 cup of sugar, 2 eggs, 2tsp vanilla extract 2 1/2 cups all purpose flour, 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt. beat butter, sugar, and vanilla in a bowl with mixer on low speed just till blended. stir together flour, baking powder and salt, stir into butter mixture. cover dough and chill 1 hour. then preheat oven to 400 degrees. roll out chilled dough and use cookie cutters for holiday shapes. bake 6 to 8 minutes till edges are golden. cool completly. Hope this helps. please visit my Yahoo 360 page with any of your other questions

Ready? Go to the store and find the refrigerated section. Buy ''Pillsbury Cookie Dough'' in the tube. Follow the directions. This will get you into the cutting, layout, baking and decorating aspects of the cookie making process, and you'll be guaranteed an edible product. Next year we'll work on making your own dough! (Don't forget to stop by the cake section and buy some sprinkles, nuts and other stuff for decorating the tops of your cookies!)

Buy Pillsbury Cookie Dough. They have the recipes on the packages. The cut out ones are very easy to make. All you do is slice them into circles and place in to the oven.

I would look up recipes online, and make sure you follow them carefully. One thing is: make sure you have all the ingredients before you stick to a recipe. And also, set a timer!!! Burnt cookies are everyone's nightmare, for the chef and the people who have to eat them.
