No, it's not an unusual price for an English Bulldog. Found out a lot about Bulldogs when my girlfriend was looking for one.

First, I'm sure that you want a purebred (show quality?) Bulldog from a reputable breeder. Shop around, get references. Then you are paying for a registered dog. Registering the litter costs the breeder money. Health checks cost money. Special food and caring for the mother and pups, cost money.

Because this breed has been bred with huge shoulders and huge heads in mind, it is common for the pups to be born by Cesarean. Most, but not all Bulldogs, can't be born the normal way. Too hard on the mother, and too hard on the pups.

Bulldogs do not have large litters.

Artificial Insemination is also common practise for the breeding of these dogs.

And English Bulldogs have their health problems.

Of course, all of this is going to cost money for the breeder which she/he will absorb by setting the appropriate prices for his/her pups.

Lastly, to all of those people who keep telling this person to go to shelters to adopt....keep in mind that there are still people who are breeding for conformation and the quality of their English Bulldog breed, and there are still people out there who are looking for this type of breed.

On the site that I use when someone i know is looking for a puppy, their prices for english bulldogs range between $800-$3750. So I would say the it depends upon the person and how much they are willing to PAY for a companion animal.

There are loving dogs at your local shelter who need a home more than a english bulldog pup does. Why not give a dog with no hope a brighter life? Be noble for once and not think on having a fashion statement.

And no, the dogs at the local shelter are not bad dogs. Or badly behaved dogs. Their living situation just didn't work out because of being an in apartment, or the owners didn't want to properly take care of them so they where taken away. Stuff like that. Every unwanted dog deserves a chance by someone who is willing to take a mutt in!

There are so many things to consider when getting a new pet. Where to get it being one of them. So my response to your question is this: Why would you go to a breeder when there are 168 English Bulldogs on www.petfinder.com wanting homes? And those are only the number of shelters and rescue groups registered with that site. All of these animals are temperament tested, vaccinated, spayed/neutered, and just want a home. So I guess my final answer is do the responsible thing and don't support breeders. Give a home to one that's only violation was being inconvenient to someone that didn't realize pet ownership is a serious, lifelong, commitment. Good luck!

Absolutely not if the person you are getting it from is a reputable breeder. You need to make sure the pup comes with at least a 1 year health guarantee against genetic defects. I would also only buy English Bulldogs from liscensed breeders. Liscensed breeders have certain standards they have to meet, meaning they have healthier dogs and puppies. There are people out there who just throw them in little pens and try o get rich. These people don't take care of their animals, and you end up with a dog with health issues. Always ask to see the parents. Take note of the conditions. Ask lots of questions. Most breeders are happy to help!

$2000 is not too much. The breeder has to cover all the expenses from the litter. The expenses are stud fee, vet appts. for both mom and the litter, c-section, etc. If it is registered and in good health, that is a fair price. Also, try to buy one with a guarantee. A lot of breeders don't offer that because they have so many health problems. If their dogs are really healthy, they will offer it. My bullies are sold for $1800-2000

Why not go to a shelter and adopt an English Bulldog/English Bulldog mix and save money as well as an animal's life? There are way too many strays out there that need homes.

From a reputable breeder, this is an acceptable price. To learn a little more about ethical/reputable breeding, check this link. http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breeding/Articles/breeder.cfm

You want to make sure your breeder follows these guidelines and isn't just some backyard variety asking a large amount because they know the breed typically goes for more. If I were going to pay that kind of money, it would be mandatory that the breeder I was buying from followed these.

The answer is depends on the breeding. I've owned a few and paid as much as 1400.00. So if yours is high quality than the price may be reasonable. Females usually cost more than males.

Why do you have to decide by Friday? A dog is a 10yr+ commitment, not a rushed decision.
