I was stunned to discover the Autobahn is only TWO lanes! I envisioned it as a wide, 5-lane highway or something. But only two lanes?!

I have lived here for 6 years now and Germans I will have to say are fantastic drivers..I am trying to take my test for my license now and it is like semester finals! The autobahn does have some speed restrictions near junctions, towns and cities. I actually think that there are less accidents on the autobahn here than what we have on out interstates and highways in the US. Even though we have slower speed limits I definitley credit the Germans as being better educated before they get a license, all around more courteous and just safer drivers.

In some areas it is two lanes in each direction like a US interstate highway. But in other modern areas it is 5 lanes or more.

And apparently the unlimited portions have the same number of wrecks per Kilometer as the restricted areas...

Depends upon the Autobahn. Some a much wider. Obviously you've never been on the A5 around Frankfurt!

They have their share of wrecks. And they're usually spectacular because of the speeds often involved.

they are much better organized drivers! slow cars actually stay on the right side, or they obay when you flas your high beams - it means to move over

there are fewer crashes, but they are more fatal

i think Modern Marvels on the History channel had a special on them, it was really interesting to watch
