No cephalexin is a different antibiotic. However, if you are concerned about penicillin allergies this medication CAN produce a cross-reaction for some people with true penicillin allergies. If this is the case you should contact your pharmacist and tell him.

NO Cephalexin does not contain any Penicillin but its chemical nature is a penicillin based derivative.....so it can cause an allergy reaction or cross-reaction much like the same as penicillin in its pure form.

No.

Cephalexin belongs to a class of antibiotics called cephalosporins. They are similar to penicillin in action and side effects. They stop or slow the growth of bacterial cells by preventing bacteria from forming the cell wall that surrounds each cell. The cell wall protects bacteria from the external environment and keeps the contents of the cell together. Without a cell wall bacteria are not able to survive. Bacteria that are susceptible to cephalexin include Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, E. coli and several others.

Cefalexin, or cephalexin, is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic - meaning it is one of the oldest. It is used to treat urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections (including sinusitis, otitis media, pharyngitis, tonsillitis and pneumonia), skin and soft tissue infections. Although not pencillin, about 5 to10% of patients with allergic hypersensitivity to penicillins will also have cross-reactivity with cephalosporins. Thus, they are contraindicated in patients with a history of severe of immediate allergic reactions to pencillins.

No it is a synthetic version of penicillin.I have allergies to many medications. Penicillin is one of them. I have taken Keflex ( brand name for cephalexin) throughout my young adult years and now into my 50's . I have never had a reaction to it. I did have a very bad reaction to penicillin. It is very well explained at the Wikipedia site below.

"Individuals who are allergic to penicillin may also be allergic to cephalexin.

I don't think there's penicillin in it, but cephalexin works so much like penicillin, that it works in the same way and causes similar side effects.
