the answers are correct there is a head of garlic, then the cloves
of garlic, the smaller portions. but to prepare it for a recipe you just don't cut it up. when you pull a clove off you will note that it is enclosed with a tough skin, you must remove this skin to make it edible, so on a cutting board or another hard surface, place the clove down on said material and take a wide bladed knife and place on top of the garlic clove (flat side on the clove) then take your hand and smack the knife crushing the clove, it makes it a lot easier to remove the skin of the clove then you can chop it as finely as you want too.

when you buy garlic in the store you are getting a bulb of garlic, break off one section and you have a clove. since you don't know a lot about garlic an easy way to peel the clove is to put on your counter or cutting board, put a spatula on top of it and smack it with you hand, the peel will split and will be easy to peel off. a little fun thing with garlic is to buy a bulb break it apart, plant the cloves in your garden or pots{unpealed} with the pointed side up. each clove will grow into a full bulb. and the greens are great on baked potatoes.

One of those "small pieces" is a clove (also, one teaspoon of garlic powder is equivalent if you don't have a whole bulb). Roll the whole bulb around on a countertop under the palm of your hand to dislodge the outer layer of skin for an easier seperation of cloves....

Entire head of garlic made up of cloves/pieces. Just pull head apart. Pull a clove - lay flat side of knife on clove and strike with fist. This will smash it and release the clove from its' skins. If center/root thread of clove is green - remove it (is bitter) and dice and go. A clove in your boiling potatoes, etc adds great flavor.

A whole clove of garlic is the whole thing - after you pile it. You can substitute garlic powder if you want. 1/8 of a teaspoon of garlic powder is equal to one garlic clove.

Just one piece. The whole thing is called a bulb. Just in case you dont know how to peel it, take a butter knife, put it on the clove, take your fist and smash it down (not to hard you dont want to crush it completely) and then peel the skin off, thats the easy way.
