Cut it in cubes. Mix it in roughly even amounts with Pace picante sauce. equal parts of each. THEN nuke. It will stay hot longer and not taste quite to plastic....

Try adding a little milk or cream to the Velveeta when you cook it in the microwave. It will make it creamier and will stay in a liquid form longer. Maybe 1/4 cup to a 8 0z pkg. Also put some salsa in it when melting. Actually use the recipe inside the box for Velveeta dip but don't use as much salsa and add cream or milk.

Yea, Velveeta is great for nachos and cooking! My father once used it, in place of cheese to make a great cheese burger soup.

Velveeta isn't cheese. It's a pasteurized, processed, cheese flavored foodlike substance, or Cheez.
You can make a very good cheese sauce for your nachos as follows:
Melt 1 tbsp of butter over medium heat in a saucepan, and add 1 tbsp of flour. Cook that, stirring constantly for about a minute, then pour in a cup of milk. Let it get hot, and put in about 1 cup of shredded sharp cheddar cheese. (You can use more, I always do.)
When it's all melty and creamy and delicious, pour it on your chips, pasta, vegetables, or whatever you like cheese on.

there is actually melted cheese you can buy in a can for nachos, but the velveta cheese if you want to use that you need to melt it in a slow cooker like a small crock pot. stirr it occasionally you can even leave it on low so it can stay warm, no more than 12 hours of course!

I had that same problem...... but I found if you melt it with a salsa (I used Pace Pacante) that it melts realy well!!! It was delicious. I poured in on chips with some peppers and sour cream too, if you like those things. Otherwise it's just good without the peppers and sour cream. Try it.

Velveeta is the devil.
Almost all cheese is going to set up like that if you try to just melt it and dip your chips in. You need to make a cheese sauce by adding liquid and emulsifiers.
The recipe below is decent, but you can leave out the carrots:

OK....velveeta cheese has ADDITIVES! It is NOT real cheese....and don't tell me this is a story from LONG LONG ago ~ it is still real. My mother-in-law used to work for them in the plant where it was made.....the employee's used to SPIT in the Velveeta cheese because it was PLASTIC!..... although she and others appreciated the "other" brands the company made.
