The question should be "What is a Magus?" as "Magi" is plural. The Magi were the priest cast of the Medes who were part of the Persian Empire. It is thought that they were absorbed by the Persians and became Zoroastrians. They believed in astrology. It is thought that they had seen stars arranged in such a way to indicate that a child had been born who was the return of the founder of the Zoroastrians--Zoroaster. This child was Jesus of Nazareth. The Magi visited him to honor him with gifts, to endorse his position as the return of Zoroaster.

The Jews and the Persians were very close and got along. The Persian king, Cyrus, allowed the Jews to return to Judea and Israel. The Pharisees were the Jews who were influenced by the Persians. Because they were close the visit made sense.
