The maximum penalty is a $250,000 fine and 5 years in jail (this does not include possible state charges as many have passed supporting laws within their own boundaries). The government does not actively track those who don't sign up - instead they use the database to check against anything applied for federally. For example - in order to apply for a government job, get a student loan or pell grant etc. etc. If you aren't registered they normally just tell you that your application is denied/suspended until you register (which makes getting into college near impossible). They also check in the event of a tax audit. I imagine, that unless there is a draft, no one is going to chase you down for failing to register. With that said - just do the right thing and register. I linked an info page below for you.

In my state young men must sign up for the Selective Service in order to get a driver's license. I'd rather my son did not have to sign up, but naturally he wanted to drive.

No Government jobs, student loans, and in some states, no drivers license, or welfare/food stamps.
They can arrest you and fine you $250,000 and give you 5 years in a federal prison.
What makes you "so special" that you don't feel the law applies to you?

Why would you not sign up? Are you that afraid to defend the country? Please don't be like one of those who ride on the backs of others and then steal their food because they are too lazy to get some on their own. Yes, you will be found out and you will not be able to get government jobs.

Technically you can be fined and arrested. Not sure I know of any recent cases of anybody who HAS been fined and/or arrested for not registering, but it's technically a legal requirement of adulthood still.
