Small talk is used to fill in the uncomfortable gaps of silence when alone with a stranger or someone you don't know well enough to talk about more personal things with.

For example, why would you want to start a conversation about politics with the waiter at a restaurant?

Smalltalk is important because it speaks volumes, regardless of the words spoken. It says "I see you. I acknowledge you. I respect you. I am being here with you and not trying to escape you. I am aware that you may be an interesting person. I am even open to the possibility that I might like you". It is a good time to insert a bit of your sense of humor - it feels great to make someone laugh. If you have trouble thinking of something to say, mention your dog or cat and be ready to listen. Everyone loves to talk about their pet.

Small talk is known as trivia talk which helps people find a common ground. Most introductions start off with the weather, the bus is late, the elevator is taking a long time....because when we meet someone we donot know it is hard to start talking to them so we start with a common area and the conversation grows from there. it is the way to open up a conversation.

We need it to cover up uncomfortable silences, and it is good for people who don't know each other very well, esp. first dates, and also it's light-hearted and doesn't require any deep thinking or heavy mood. Sometimes people don't want to get deep, they want to stay on the surface, and small talk enables them to do that.
