How dangerouse are pipe bombs?What kind of conditions can cuase a premature detenation?Are they illigal? I'm just curious.

There's really not set parameters for a "pipe bomb". All it is a pipe filled with one of many different kinds of explosive. How dangerous they are and how likey they are to explode prematurely depend entirely on they type of explosive used and how much was packed in.

They kill by sending fragments of shrapnel flying in all directions. If you are struck with a piece of shrapnel, your injury will depend greatly on how fast the shrapnel was moving (a function of distance and how close you are when it explodes). Even a low-yield explosion could severely injure or kill everyone within a 10 foot radius.

The explosives that can be used vary greatly in volatility. Plasti explosives, for example, ar extremely stable and an undesired detonation is almost impossible. Chemical explosives are more reactive, and any kind of physical shock could set them off. There are also a lot of explosives in between.

Yes, pipe bombs are generally illegal. Normally, even having the explosives on hand to make the bomb is illegal unless you're licensed.

This does not really answer you question but I just wanted to say that last year in 7th grade there were 4 pipe bombs set to detonate a my school.When we arrived every student was being routed to the feild and into the high school field that was next to our school.Hundreds of kids on tha lawn.We did not know what was going on.We went to the high school gym.Half the kids called their parents by cell phone and we waited siting on the bleachers trying to figure out what was going on.All 700 of us.Thats when the principle of the high school and my school explained the situation and why we were hearded into the high school gym.There were pipe bombs.The S.W.A.T teams and bomb dogs were in the school.Lots and lots of police cars as well.Half the kids got dismissed and were taken home.They had found the pipe bombs.There was one in the gym.One in the main foyer and two outside of the building where we enter.Our principle explained that there are many types of pipe bombs.Some can blowup enire rooms and hotels.Some cause a scuff in the dirt.The pipe bombs in our school were medium size and were to detonate during lunch when we are on rush hour.The bombs were enough to probably cause an explosion of a 2 meter diameter each from what I heard by student sources.Then the flames would set the building on fire which is the real danger.Then the students would have ran for the doors and some would be trampled.The thought is scary.But our principle explained how dangerous it would have been and that if we have any info on who did it we should tell.If every bomb were to have detonated at lunch it would have killed less then 5 students and probably other deaths would be caused by fire or being trampled,many would be injured though.Its enough to probably kill somebody really close to it or atleast blow their leg of.But if we include the fact that during lunch a whole bunch of students would bee there and the halls would be jammed as well as the gym it can be a serious threat.But the pipe bombs were very small.I think a lot more would be injured and very few dead.But thanksto our janitor we were saved.He had found it while on duty.Anyhow the building was secure after 2 hours of waitingin the high school gym.Half the students were dismissed.I felt really unsafe in school for the whole day.We did not do much in class.Just crossword puzzles and mini lessons.I think they found out who did it later.
