Yes it is primarily hereditary. Usually carried by the male, and often skips every other generation. Every person is bipolar to some extent, but your doctor has to diagnose the severity of your condition. Some people are primarily either manic or depressive.i have bipolar and am mainly manic. I am on Trileptol and Wellbutrin XL, neither of which cause sever side effects and stabilize the condition. My recommendation is to have your doctor start with small doses because too much will wreck your life, no concentration.

Most studies say it is. I have also read that bipolar can occur in early adults who have suffered from some sort of Post Traumatic Stress Syndrom/Disorder. If severe depression or mania run in your family there is a good chance of you or your offspring eventually getting it. The good thing is that the more you learn about it and yourself the better you are able to deal with it. Medications should help but unless its severe don't let your doctor push you into anti-phsycotics or any addicting anti-depresants which may make your symptoms worse. I know, I have been on an array of medications for this disease. Finally coming to rest on Welbutrin XL of all meds! It is not physically addicting and does not have any side effects that I've noticed. the good thing is if you miss a dose you're not sick as a dog. I can't say its a miracle cure but it certainly takes the crazy uncontrolable spin off my highs and lows and brings them closer together on the spectrum. I've been on it now for almost a year and noticed a difference within 4-6 weeks. I hope this helps, but definately the more you learn about it the better you are to cope with it or a loved one with it. Good luck.
