Its a real hot variety of Pepper - Capsicum baccatum / C. frutescens. Belongs to the Solanaceae family.

Named after its native place Cayenne in Guinea.

The fruits i.e. chillies are dried and powdered for culinary purposes. It is generally rated at 40,000 to 90,000 Scoville Units

The pepper has many medicinal uses apart from cookery. It aids in digestion, and reduces flatulance. It is an expectorant as well. The hot principle capsaicin is used as a counterritant in many balms / gels for arthritic / rheumatic pains. Capsaicin has anti-oxidant properties and is being researched for anti-cancer properties as well. Also contains Vitamin C.

How does it help what? Cayenne pepper is made from ground up red pepper flakes, its very hot and a little goes a long way. It helps to give flavor to bland things and also helps to break up mucus in the body...believe it or not, but if you are sick with a wet cough, it helps you to get rid of the mucus quicker....

According to my herb book, it's good for the circulatory and resperatory system...I've noticed that when I get bronchitis, taking cayenne capsules really helps clear up the cough.
