Some people are so self centered that hints just dont work. You have to be blatantly blunt and say NO. If you do not they will continue to take advantage of you. It's your job to protect your children and if they go without because you didnt say no then it is your fault.
You have the right to say no to people.

Then stop hinting and set up ground rules. You can be polite about it; but be firm. Do not let them take advantage of you. Once you set up the rules, you must be firm in following through on your rules. Explain to them what your rules are, and tell them what will happen if they don't follow the rules.

As an example, tell them that they must call you first before coming over. If they show up unannounced, you will not let them in. Whatever rules you set-up for once they are there, make sure that you always follow through. If they so against your rules, then ask them to leave your house and that they will not be welcome back until they can respect your household.

Believe when I say this. Hinting is NOT the answer to your problem. I was in the exact same situation as you. The family members took over my apartment and my son's room. I had no choice but to ask them to leave. I was a single mom at the time and my son was absolutely miserable while they stayed with us. I simply sat them down while the kids were outside and told them that they had one week to move out. When they asked me why I told them they my son means more to me than life itself and it's killing me seeing his things being ruined and my whole household being taken over and you have to move out. And they did. Good luck and happy holidays.

You have to stop hinting. I know you don't want to hurt anyone's feelings but sometimes you just have to put everything out on the table especially when people are making it hard for you to provide for your own children. Let them know you enjoy their company and you love them but you can't afford to have them come over and borrow things from you and take things when you are working so hard just to provide for your own family. Let them know that they are welcome over but they have to stop asking for things and they need to return what they have already taken from you. If they can't respect that then you need to let them know they will have to stop coming over. No more freeloaders!!!!

forget hints. some people hear hints and ignore; they just don't care. tell them right out you are not running a free store, your resources are for you and your kids. don't be afraid to be blunt, nasty even. they obvioiusly don't care about you.

Don't let them in hte house then, take away any spare house keys in their possession, don't answer the door when they come home. They'll get the picture.

Just be straightforward and tell them that you can't afford to support all of them.
