it is best for all parties if you dump as soon as you know the relationship is going sour. A friend of mine was dumped an hour after he gave his girl a Christmas gift and it killed him.

Speaking from experience, you should do it before. I believe it is less painful to know the truth and start the healing process, if there is any, instead of prolonging the act and pretending it's all good. Then there's less drama hopefully about having a charade of a holiday if you were to break up after.

I dump stuff on Goodwill before AND after. Before, to make room for the good stuff we get. After, to get rid of the crap we graciously received.
It's all about clutter maintenance.

I wouldn't put them through that right before the holiday. Of course, it all depends on your reason for the break up. If you're leaving because they've been unfaithful to you, or if they were cruel or abusive, then I don't see any reason to wait.
If you're leaving simply because it's not working, but they've been good to you, let them enjoy Christmas without that on their mind.
