I just bought a new charcoal grill- previously all of my BBQ'ing has been with propane. I'm venturing out using real wood charcoal and don't know how to tell when the charcoal is ready to use, or how to light it adequately.

HELP!!

When the coals are a white dusty color with a red glow, there ready. Cook as you would with propane. *

Are you talking about wood chips or an actual charcoal that's made out of wood?

With wood chips you just add a couple handfuls of them with you favorite charcoal (I recommend Kingsford).

Toss the wood chips on just before you light the charcoal and wait until the charcoal has a unformed gray (ashy) appearance then add whatever you are cooking to the grill.

The charcoal stays hot a good long time ( for hours) and by waiting until it has turned the gray ashy color you get a better all over heat (pile it all up in a stack and light it and once it turns the ashy color spread it out).

The wood chips add a great smoky flavor too so they are really cool...rrrr hot lmao

Just let it burn (as per instructions on the bag). I usually wait until it flames up a second time. Of course the first flame is from the starter fluid, then it will go out leaving the coals to smolder. Let them smolder 5-10 minutes, by this time they should have a new flame that is not as bright. Stir the coals to even them out install the grill (if not already on) wait a few minutes then lay the burgers on it. Use the lid to help control the flames by way of the vent on top and bottom. Be careful not to burn them. It usually takes me a few cooking to get a feel for a new grill. Good luck.

cover the grill with some foil paper so the grease from the burgers wont start up flames
