Dick Clark is a time and space contiuum bending, non aging alien. He sends the entire state of California into the future through a time warp so they can see the ball drop at the same time New Yorkers do. Then the Governator restores the timeline.

They delay the NYC broadcast until its midnight in California for real to show Californians then. The hosts of TV party in CA film in advance their reactions to the NYC sister party so they (NYC) can show the East coast what would be out there. Its just hype.

It is called tape delay.
Just like Good Morning America or The Today Show.
It drives me crazy when the TV says they are live in the a.m. and it is light outside, but on TV it is still dark out. Being "LIVE" must attract a lot more viewers.

It't not really live. Its a 3 hour tape delay. Depending on what channel you're watching, it could be the live drop or a repeat. We were drunk and celebrated new years an hour early once.

The ball drop is live - but it happens at 9pm California time (which is 12am NYC time).
