I have often wondered this myself as one doesn't actually sit on the baby!! lol

I think it comes from the fact that a person comes to your house and 'sits in' with a child whilst the parents go out.

They should call it sofasitting or bedsitting really because that is where you actually sit!!

*LOL* I don't know. Unless it's an infant it does anything but sit. Crawl, kick, run. If it's an infant it's change diapers, play with them, and of course sit with them. I think Child care is best because to me babysit seems more like all you do is sit with the baby.

Because you can't do anything or go anywhere when watching a baby. You just sit there with no distractions and be on call for the baby only.
