okay, everybody answered, but a primary color is one that can't be made by mixing any other colors together. Red is one primary, blue is the second and yellow is the third. The next level of colors (secondary colors) comes when you mix the primaries together: red and blue equals purple, red and yellow equals orange, blue and yellow equals green. Every color that can be made is made from varying combinations of the three primary colors with the addition of white or black. I've included a link below that shows the basic color wheel for your information.

You cannot mix red because since it is a primary color, it is a pure color. The brightest, cleanest red you can possibly achieve will be one that comes right out of a tube.

All colors that you physically mix will lose purity and saturation. For example, if you have a very bright pink and mix it with a different very bright pink, you will have a duller, less saturated pink. To purposely desaturate a red, it is best to use its compliment, green, because this would bring it down without killing it like adding black or white would do.

To understand it better, consider Fauvist art! Around the turn of the 20th century, artists such as Matisse and Derain started to use extremely bright, unmixed, "straight-out-of-the-tube" colors to express the very fact that their art was put onto a canvas by a human being. Whereas traditional art art tried to imitate nature and reality with contrived tints/tones/shades, Fauvists wanted to emphasize the mark of the artist with manufactured composites...you'll find lots of bona fide RED in their work!

So, invest in a red tube, such as "spectrum red" or a similar hue. You'll need to do the same for all of the primaries and secondaries, and you can then use them to make customized colors...just rememeber that for cleaner hues you'd be better off having more pre-mixed store-bought ones - this way you can get the exact shade you want without adding from more than 3, maybe 4 different tubes.

Red is a primary color along with yellow and blue. Colors made out of red are secondary colors. So you can't mix any colors to make red.

Red, like blue and yellow come from a primary source, like cadmium (yellow) or cobalt (blue), I just saw a note about red coming from iron oxide

The other colors are called 'secondary' because colored paint can be derived from the 'primary' ones, the colors you must have first.

I have made color wheels as exercises and from those three colors, red, yellow, and blue you can mix up an amazing palette of colors... and when you add them to black or to white you get a huge selectiion.of colors completely different from what you started with.

When you add water, you get tints of the same color. They are not a whit different, but they are more transparent.

All and I do mean all of these people are wrong! If we are to agree on the fact that one Cant mix up a primary then the answers you received were wrong. Because magenta and yellow easily make up said primary. Whether it be opaque or translucent. I too was taught the same mess everyone here is shouting but did a little test to see for myself. Don't believe me just try it. And be prepared for your mind to be blown.

It would theoretically make a light brown. Here's why I think so: Mixing gold with red would darken the gold and give it a reddish tint, similar to redwood or mahogany. Adding white would lighten the colors and would therefore make a light brown. I don't know for sure, but that is my guess as to what color you would get.

Non, red is a primary color, it means it´s a color base, used to make other colors mixing it with the other primary color such as blue and yellow... to get the secondary colors, 3, 4, etc... or with black and white. Unless you wanted to obtain colors from the nature, as minerals, plants, etc. You´ll have to research a bit more.
