I'm going to be travelling around China for 2 weeks, and taking a laptop. Can anyone tell me if I'll have success in finding wireless access in Hotels and Airports?

I know content will be restricted due to censorship, etc!

Hi, the wireless access coverage is good in tier 1 cities such as Beijing and Shanghai but most of that will not be free. You will need to pay for it via China Mobile or another operator, even at the airport. Starbucks does not offer free wireless access too.

That said, there are some cafes that do offer free wireless access. Danwei.org has quite a good listing for Beijing, Shanghai and Kunming. See:

Its very good, in the modern city areas there are many cafes that have free wireless internet for its customers. Most good hotels have free boardband internet for there customers as well. For airports I would guess you have to pay for it. The only problem that you may have is the wireless internet card that you use may not be useable for networking in china. And don't worry about censorship, if you know a good proxy website that is no problem.

I've been going back and forth to China for about seven years and though the wireless internet situation has certainly improved, you will not find many places outside of the larger cities that offer wireless.
