Abraham's great faith in God was shown to God by the fact that Abraham was going to sacrifice Isaac. He knew God would provide an alternative to Isaac, yet even if He did, He still loved and had great faith in God. He trusted God. Therefore God saw Abraham's great faith and belief in Him so He assured Abraham that He will indeed keep His promise about blessing Abraham and that Abraham would indeed be the Father of Many Nations. Which God did as Abraham indeed became a Father of Many Nations. God always keeps His promises.

If you understand he told Abraham that since he could swear by anything greater he would swear by himself. Just think about the old saying we have all said "I swear to God".

The litteral translation from the Hebrew would mean something between a strong promise and a covenant.

"For when God made his promise to Abraham, since he could not swear by anyone greater, he swore by himself, 14 saying: “Assuredly in blessing I will bless you, and in multiplying I will multiply you.” 15 And thus after [Abraham] had shown patience, he obtained [this] promise. 16 For men swear by the one greater, and their oath is the end of every dispute, as it is a legal guarantee to them. "

Hebrew 6:13-16

I think Paul just explained that for you.

There is nothing higher than God, therefore He can only swear to and by Himself.

Maybe that's why I don't use whatever version you're using. I like the version I use, the Recovery Version. It does not talk in Thy and stuff as often, and it is more understandable. It is also WELL-TRANSLATED.
