He is 10 months old and a little scared of new people until he gets to know them. He is also scared of loud noises. So with about twenty people coming to the house - i dont want to traumatize him for life! My boyfriend says we should just put him in the back room in his crate, but i'm not so sure about that because he would be able to hear the commotion and that might scare him too. The other side is to just let him be with us and it might get him more socialized (or he might torment my guests by trying to play) hmmmmm?????

I would put him in his crate in the back room- especially if he is used to being crated. Many parties have been spoiled by a hyper dog jumping all over everyone and spilling stuff...trying to eat the food, etc.

I would cover the crate with a sheet and turn on a radio to some classical music so that the noises in the front of the house aren't so noticeable. I'd also get him a new chew bone as a special treat.

Be sure to take him for a walk before putting him in his crate.

Enjoy your party.

If you know he is scared of new people and loud noises, I say the crate idea is good.
Put him in a crate with a blanket over it to make it all dark inside. Face the crate to a wall ("entry" of the crate facing the wall) and leave some soft music or a TV in there to calm him a little bit.
Or you could keep him out and try to socialize him more. Remember, if he is SCARED of loud noises and new people, put him in an isolated room that people will walk in, but not the center of all the commotion.

Personally I would not invite your puppy to join the party. The guests would probably have alot of fun with him but I don't think the women would appreciate having the puppy jump up on their nylons or if he gets nervous having a accident. Also people might feed him junk food, and that's not good for a puppy or he could get all excited, and have a accident or slip out the front door, and get lost. You'll be doing him a favor by putting him in a crate with a toy, blanket, and maybe leave a radio on for him.

Try both. Socializing is great, but keeping a puppy locked up during a major party might be a good thing for part of the time. I had a 8 month old puppy that was shy with people but would be fine around the crowd. She would pick who she would hang with and by the end of the event, she would be pretty much good with anyone.

How about if you give him the back room as an option. put his crate in there with his toys but leave the door open slightly. before your geusts arrive, bring him in the room so that he knows it is okay to be in there. But you are right that it is not a good idea to isolate him. not only will the noise scare him but it encourages anti-social behavior. It might also help to leave some treats in there, too.

See if you can get a very mild tranquilizer from your vet,but only use it if he seems very upset(panting, whining excessively).I would let him out with you for a while, and if he seems nervous, then I think the crate is a good idea.Give him a Kong or similar toy stuffed with treats so he has to work to get at them, and turn a radio on (soothing music) to muffle the noise.Check on him frequently, but don't make a big fuss.If he's used to his crate, then theat's where he will feel most comfortable.

I think it's best for you puppy to get to know all of your friends and relatives at the party, that way he'll get to know more people and won't be as scared. Make sure you accompany him all the time throughout the party, or you might be able to get someone at the party that he knows, to play with him. Make him feel secure. Gradually, it'll learn to cope with loud noises and foreign people. Don't hide, just let it be, accompany him, and he'll know how to cope with it. Or, if he doesn't get any better, you might as well make him go to sleep in your room or somethin.

Your could put him in the back room but leave the crate door open. scatter his toys on the floor, give him food and water, and let him outside every once and a while. Check on him every half-hour. Just don't forget about him.

Neither, he will be scared both ways. He is a puppy and too much excitement with too many guests will scare him with all the music, noise, and everyone touching him.

In a crate he will feel abandoned and alone.....

I agree with your boyfriend, but to check in on the pup periodically. You could bring him out to introduce him to your guests. He will probably be happy to be back in his crate - again check in on him periodically - give him a chewy to keep him occupied. Leave a radio on for him. He'll be OK
