Even in full Automatic mode there are some settings that can cause wrong exposure.

Check in your Menus for these:

The Mode Wheel should be on Automatic.
White Balance should be on Automatic.
ISO should be on Automatic.
Metering should be on Multi.

If these are all set correctly and you still get dark (under-exposed) pics, the camera may be defective. Take it for service.

Good Luck

Your camera is not a very bad camera. DP Review gives it 4.5 out of 5 stars for its qualities. Shooting in auto is basically letting the camera take control for you. If you shoot in manual, you can adjust f-stops, shutter speeds, and others. But, if you don't want to go so far in to photography as that, you may want to check your ISO speed. For low light situations, a higher ISO is necessary. Consider buying a book about photography, as it will help you take better lighted photos, as well as give you control of your camera.
