"Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, as a man wakes from the stupor of wine". (From the NIV Bible, Psalm 78:65)

You see, the bible is a book written by men and proclaimed to be the word of God, an account of eye witnesses. According to the Christian magazine Awake, number 17 of Sep 8 1957, there are 50,000 errors . Which in my view it's a good enough number to make the bible a corrupted book. And I believe this verse is a big lie that has no context at all. And who ever wrote it will be thrown in hell the day we all stand in the front of God. God who The One and Only the Eternal, the Absolute.
"He begets not, nor is He begotten.
And there is none like unto Him

And for those speaking of this verse as figurative language, let me ask you this

Why should god's worb be figurative? Isn't meant to be understood by all of us, the child the old, the dumb and the smartest?

Not a lie. But read it carefully for what is really being said. And in context with the rest of the chapter and surrounding verses.

Remember, it says "the Lord awoke AS from a sleep, AS a man wakes......." As though asleep. It never says God was sleeping. And again, read all the associated verses to see what this is really saying.

This guy really needs to double check his quote about the supposed 50,000 errors in the Bible. The entire Bible only has about 31,000 verses in the Old and New Testament together.

This questioner seems intent on dishonestly quoting from the publications of Jehovah's Witnesses. It was not Awake! magazine that made that statement; but instead that issue of Awake! reasoned to refute the idea!

From the same era (about 50 years ago), here is a related quote on the same matter from Awake!'s companion magazine, The Watchtower (May 1, 1953, page 262; article “Keeping a Tight Grip on the Word of Life”):

[begin quote]
Popular magazines loosen the grip of many on the Word of life. Look [magazine], February 26, 1952, tried to appear sensational by apparently suddenly discovering the Bible was filled with errors. It called attention to about half a dozen spurious passages, such as Mark 16:9-20, John 8:1-11 and 1 John 5:7. After citing these few big errors Look glibly states that Bible scholars agree that there are from 20,000 to 50,000 errors in the Bible. Does not this leave the impression that these thousands of errors are serious ones, like those mentioned, and hence that the Bible is wholly unreliable? Actually, serious errors are remarkably few, and years ago they were ferreted out and eliminated in modern translations. Scholars recognize how remarkably accurate has been the preservation of the Scriptures. In a mercenary endeavor to be sensational Look misrepresented the Bible, subtly discrediting it. The secular press in general leaps to the opportunity to shake confidence in the Bible.
[end quote]

Regarding the Scripture mentioned in the question, readers are reminded that this verse is expressed from the point of view of a human observer who feels God moves too slowly. Of course, Jehovah God does not conform to human ideas of timeliness.

(Psalm 78:65) Then Jehovah began to awake as from sleeping, Like a mighty one sobering up from wine.

(Psalm 44:23-24) Do arouse yourself. Why do you keep sleeping, O Jehovah? Do awake. Do not keep casting off forever. 24 Why do you keep your very face concealed? Why do you forget our affliction and our oppression?

(Isaiah 42:13) Like a mighty man Jehovah himself will go forth. Like a warrior he will awaken zeal.

(2 Peter 3:9) Jehovah is not slow respecting his promise, as some people consider slowness, but he is patient with you because he does not desire any to be destroyed but desires all to attain to repentance.

(Romans 2:4) Do you despise the riches of [God's] kindness and forbearance and long-suffering, because you do not know that the kindly quality of God is trying to lead you to repentance?

For those who don't understand figurative language, the purpose of this statement is to describe the forcefulness and suddenness with which God responded to those who had disobeyed Him.

Though it is in Old English, the quote is a bit clearer in the King James Version: "Then the Lord awaked AS one out of sleep, and LIKE a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine."

The Bible makes it very clear that God doesn't sleep: "...He that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, He that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep" (Psalm 121:3b & 4).

No, it is NOT a lie.

Sailor, it's obvious that there are a few things you don't understand about the Bible, about God, and about faith. First of all, "Awake" is NOT a Christian magazine. It is put out by so-called Jehovah's Witnesses, who twist scripture to their own destruction.

Secondly, whenever a piece of writing--even the Bible--uses obvious similes (descriptive phrases using AS or LIKE to compare one thing to another), the purpose is to illustrate a concept in a more powerful way than it could be expressed literally.

And finally, the Bible is not meant to be understood by all of us--but only by those who love God and sincerely seek the truth. Jesus Himself said, "I thank thee, O Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because thou hast hid these things from the wise and prudent, and hast revealed them unto babes" (Matthew 11:25).

The Bible also says that "the preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness; but unto us which are saved, it is the power of God. For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this world? Hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world?" (I Corinthians 1:18-20). It also says that "the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (I Corinthians 2:14).

It is "heart knowledge," (that comes through spiritual enlightenment), rather than "head knowledge," (that comes from intellectual study), that allows us to truly understand the Word of God. This is good news, because that means that anyone who truly loves God can understand His truth. In fact, we are told that we must come to Christ "as a little child" (or with childlike faith) if we truly desire to know Him.

god doesn't sleep.

this verse from the quran talks about the real truth about god

Allâh! Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He), the Ever Living, the One Who sustains and protects all that exists. Neither slumber, nor sleep overtake Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on earth. Who is he that can intercede with Him except with His Permission? He knows what happens to them (His creatures) in this world, and what will happen to them in the Hereafter . And they will never compass anything of His Knowledge except that which He wills. His Kursî extends over the heavens and the earth, and He feels no fatigue in guarding and preserving them. And He is the Most High, the Most Great. [This Verse 2:255 is called Ayat-ul-Kursî.] (Al-Baqarah 2:255)

It can't be a lie. It is Asaph's point of view.

Look at the whole psalm. (It is a beautiful witness to the history of the tribes of Israel.) God used Moses to pull them from slavery in Egypt and still they rebelled. They set up idols, and put God to the test and did not trust him.

Israel thirsted. God sent forth water from a rock.

God sent manna when they were starving in the desert to feed them, and still they rebelled. They even rejected moses.

So God let them be overtaken by their enemies. They turned from him, he said "fine" so to speak.

Then they were sad about this, and woke up. Look at a portion of the whole passage.(I encourage you to read it from the start.

61 He sent the ark of his might into captivity,
his splendor into the hands of the enemy.

62 He gave his people over to the sword;
he was very angry with his inheritance.

63 Fire consumed their young men,
and their maidens had no wedding songs;

64 their priests were put to the sword,
and their widows could not weep.

65 Then the Lord awoke as from sleep,
as a man wakes from the stupor of wine.

66 He beat back his enemies;
he put them to everlasting shame.

67 Then he rejected the tents of Joseph,
he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim;

68 but he chose the tribe of Judah,
Mount Zion, which he loved.

69 He built his sanctuary like the heights,
like the earth that he established forever.

70 He chose David his servant
and took him from the sheep pens;

71 from tending the sheep he brought him
to be the shepherd of his people Jacob,
of Israel his inheritance.

72 And David shepherded them with integrity of heart;
with skillful hands he led them.

IT SEEMS to me (in my imperfect opinion) that Asaph (the writer of this psalm.) Couldn't understand how the lord couldn't hear their cries. It was like God was sleeping. Like he was seeing things in an unclear way as if drinking wine.

We see though why he wouldn't hear their crys, it was because they had turned from God and went their own way.

Just like people do today, and wonder why their "prayers" aren't answered.

The psalm above may raise more questions. The scriptures and prayer can answer them all.

Put your trust in the lord. Jesus is his perfect son who we all killed and we must ask forgiveness and turn to God.

You have to be kidding right? Which bible translation do you have? God does not sleep, he would no have any reason to get drunk, he is not human therefore not weak to the flesh as we are. What is your reason behind asking a question like this? Are you baiting people to argue with you?

According to the Egyptian creation legend God created the universe with one mega-ejaculation. I'm sure that's how it must have felt. You zonk out after ejaculating. I wonder how tired God must have been after creating the Universe?

I'm being serious.
