Hard to make these comparisons of boxers who fought in different eras, but I'll go with Ali. I see some good names here though . . . . Hagler, Frasier, both Sugar Rays(Leonard and Robinson), Julio Cesar Chavez, Holyfield . . .

I've always been a big fan of Vinnie Pazienza. I saw Ray Mercer at the Olympic Trials in '88. He just kept knocking everybody out. Then he won the Gold Medal in Korea.

So many spring to mind Sugar Ray Robinson, Muhammed Ali, Rocky Marciano.
Pound for pound my favourite boxer was "Marvellous" Marvin Hagler, who no matter what anyone says was robbed by Leonard in 1986.
As an icon without doubt Ali, and at the weight he was to stop at least two boxers careers (Foreman & Frazier - at their peak I mean) is quite something.
Then there was Chavez lower down the divisions who had something like 90+ fights.
The list is almost endless, but for me watching Hagler fight was fantastic.

Cassius Clay/Mohammed Ali = The greatest Boxer of all time.

Mike Tyson = Could have been the best boxer of all time, Not so good defence after D'mato died and went off the rails when he found the dollar. Relied to much on his Knockout punch.

Muhammad Ali imo. 3 times world heavyweight champion. First won it in 1964, and last time 1978. Never got counted out in 63 fights. His footwork, ring skill, durability, speed, jab and stamina was second to none.
Mike Tyson was very good in his prime but he would not have been able to beat Ali for the simple fact that he was not smart enough. Most people lost to Tyson before the fight even started through fear, but Ali would not have feared him. Imo Tyson would have been stopped late in the fight or more likely disquallified. When Tyson got bullied he lost it. Remember Douglas and Holyfield 1 +2.

I think Sugar Ray Robinson pound for pound all time greatest. Joe louis was great too! My fav to watch is Tyson though. If only Tyson had the heart of a champ, he woulda stole the Greatest title from Ali.

Pound for pound it was Sugar Ray Robinson. A welterweight champ and a 5 time middleweight champ.

He started his career in 1940, by 1952 his record was 113 wins, 3 losses, and 1 draw.

Nah-seriously-without a doubt-Ali-hero worshipped him as a kid-lightning fast for such a big man-moved like a ballet dancer and banged like a 20 tonne press-the epitomy of elegance and power combined.Hey,what an intelligent dude,too-who stood up to his government over Vietnam.A truly world class athlete and person and years ahead of his time in everything!!

You said boxer, not fighter, so that rules out Tyson, Marciano etc. Would go for Ali but Sugar Ray Leonard has got to be up there, further back there was Henry Armstrong who held titles at five weights.
