It used to cost money for getting your credit report too, until they passed a federal law that you can get it free once a year.
The score costs money because the credit companies will make money any way they can off you.

The credit bureaus give you a free REPORT because the law requires them to. They charge for the SCORE because they can.

Each of the three (Equifax, Experian & Trans-Union) is required to give you a free report on you once a year; for best results, stagger your requests by four months. After that, you might be able to purchase one from them before the 12 months are up.

It should be remembered that these are private firms, who work for their MEMBERS, ie, the people who PAY for their services. Like banks, who give loans, mortgages & credit cards, as well as other people who might want to give you credit, or otherwise depend on your track record of how reliably you pay your bills on time. Like a landlord, or an auto dealer.

These are their records ABOUT you, not your records.

If you don't like what's in their files, pay your bills on time.

Credit is a useful tool, but a nasty master.

Three simple words:

budget, Budget, BUDGET.

Won't cost you anything if you don't buy it. Quit whining and pay up or shut up.

Why pay for water? Why pay to watch TV when all your going to watch are ads to buy more stuff.

You pay because someone is charging you unless you don't buy into their crap.

And if money gets tight, GO EARN MORE!

Everyone attempts to get money for everything. "Service fees" and "processing fees" are everywhere. This is capitalism.
