I read on Wikipedia that he did... Was there some philosophy or biological reason he did this?

its considered a natural herb in most parts of the world, it is a healthy thing to eat, smoking it is the only way it can hurt you.

He was very stress with everything around him, he never stop!!, sleeping 4 hours per night, working 18 hours a day training 3 hours!!! and more. So he use the cannabis when he was writting just to relax a little.
