I use the regular recipe and add garlic powder, pepper, onion and melt cheese in it. Save some for the top. We like it like this too!!!

Here are two I've used in years past that were a big success.

Cheesy Green Bean Casserole

INGREDIENTS
2 (10.75 ounce) cans condensed cream of mushroom soup
3/4 cup milk
1 (2.8 ounce) can French fried onions
2 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
2 (16 ounce) packages frozen French cut green beans
1/2 pound processed cheese food (eg. Velveeta), sliced

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). Grease a 2 quart casserole dish.

In a mixing bowl, combine mushroom soup, milk, cheddar cheese, and half of the onions. Mix together.

Layer the bottom of a 2 quart casserole dish with 1/2 of the green beans. Pour half of the soup mixture over beans, and add half of the processed cheese. Repeat layering, and top with remaining onions.

Bake for 30 to 40 minutes.

Green Bean and Portobello Mushroom Casserole

INGREDIENTS
4 slices bacon
1/4 cup olive oil
1 pound baby portobello mushrooms, sliced
1/2 medium onion, chopped
3 cloves garlic, finely chopped
1/2 cup slivered almonds
1 (10.75 ounce) can condensed cream of mushroom soup with roasted garlic
3/4 teaspoon seasoned salt with no MSG
1/3 teaspoon white pepper
2 (15.5 ounce) cans French cut green beans, drained
1 cup shredded Cheddar cheese

DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C).

Place bacon in a large skillet over medium-high heat, and fry until crisp. Remove from the skillet to drain on paper towels. Pour olive oil into the skillet, and reduce heat to medium. When oil is hot, add mushrooms and onion; cook, stirring frequently until the onions start to become translucent. Add garlic, and fry for a couple of minutes, just until fragrant. Stir in the mushroom soup and almonds, and bring to a boil. Season with seasoned salt and white pepper, and crumble in the bacon. Gently stir in the green beans, then transfer the mixture to a casserole dish.

Bake uncovered for 30 minutes in the preheated oven. Remove from the oven, and sprinkle Cheddar cheese over the top.

Return to the oven for 5 minutes, or until cheese is melted. Let stand 5 minutes before serving

i take a few cans of french cut green beans and but them in the slow cooker with juice and when the beans are really hot i cube up a box of Velveeta cheese and add a small jar of pimentos. let the cheese melt stirring once or twice (it takes 20 mins for the cooker to get back up heat every time the lid is taken off) and serve. it goes really well with turkey and baked ham. oh yeah add about 1/4 to1/2 of a finely diced onion when you put in the green beans. happy holidays.

If no one is allergic to nuts....I love to put chopped walnuts into my casserole. I also use another cream of stuff. Cream of celery/chicken/potato. Dont like mushroom myself. What is the traditional recipe anyway? I add the fried onion stuff on top. But yeah add walnuts! yummyyyyyy

I don't know where you are from but if you want to add some "southern" flavor to it cook your green beans for a couple of hours with some country ham or fatback for seasoning before you add the soup and onions.

Add some dry lipton onion soup (a tablespoon?) and use celery soup instead of mushroom. Or half mushroom and half celery.

spice up your "traditional" recipe by just adding some pickled or fresh chopped jalapeno peppers and a can of diced green chili's along with some shredded cheddar cheese. It's really good and you can control the amount of "heat" you want by adding more or less jalapeno peppers!

I can't stand that dish at all, but I'd probably add bacon.
