Taxis don't have car seats, but there is combination stroller/car seat: I have a friend with a two year old who travels with this all the time:

You mean for a kid? No, you're not gonna get a car seat in a taxi!

If you're concerned about it, just take your kid on the subway in a stroller.

Whatever you do, do NOT "drag a car seat along" with you to New York. It will be highly inconvenient for you, make just about every activity impossible, and mark you as a dumb tourist.

Believe it or not, you are not required by law to put your kid in a car seat in a taxi in NYC. if you want to use one, you must bring your own.
