Hi I am looking for lenses for my D50 and was wondering which lens will be the best fore shooting sports: The Nikon 55-200 mm F/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Lens for 150 or the
Quantaray 70-300 mm DI f/4-5.6 Digital Series AF Zoom Lens for Nikon for also 150 dollars.

Thanks

Neither! But stay away from the Quantaray. Save up for a faster lens in the constant 2.8 f/stop range. Ever think of using an older used manual focus lens? Great glass, cheaper, bit of a pain to use but great results.

The Quantaray is a relabeled lens by some other manufacturer, so I can't comment as I don't know what it really is.

The Nikon would be a better choice, except for the obvious difference in focal length. This particular Nikon is not very fast on auto-focus, so it's not a great choice for sports, unless you want to use manual focus.

Consider the Nikkor 70-300 f/4.5-5.6 G zoom. The auto-focus is on the slower side, but the price is on the lower side.

The price is in the same ball park as the ones you've listed and at least it is a "known quantity" instead of an unknown Quantaray.

I have the 55-200 and like it. I have taken to using an f/2.8 lens because I needed the wider aperature for low light but I have used the 55-200 at motorsports and daylight football (American style) with good results. It is light as a feather and compact. I also used it for some portraits during a photography class and got some excellent shots. Unless you need the extra focal length I'd go with the Nikkor.

Another great lens for a low price is the Nikon 50mm f/1.8. It is fast and one of my all around favorites for my D50...and it costs around $100. I believe it is often refered to as "poor man's fast glass".

Quantaray lenses are okay, but I'd go for the Nikon lens, especially since it covers a wider range.
