First of all, don't follow that thing where it is "supposed" to be two or three months' salary - simply not true, just a marketing ploy from jewellers.
Mature women honestly don't care about the price of the ring, it is the symbolism which is important to them. Don't break the bank on getting a ring; it's not worth going into debt over! You can get really beautiful diamond and gold rings for $200 and up. I would say an average price is $800.

I've heard the jewelry industry standard of two month's pay, but there is no good guideline in dollars that anyone other than you yourself can determine. Some women crave diamonds, and others would rather you saved the money and were able to have a nice honeymoon, rent a little nicer place to live, or invest in the future. I think the best thing to do is to talk about it. If you are not comfortable talking about money, at least in terms of "how important is this or that to you", then you need to get comfortable before you think about marriage. The important considerations are what is important to her and fits in with her lifestyle (if all her friends are hoisting around 3 carat stones, you might be in trouble), and then, what can you realistically afford without giving up the things that will benefit both of you in the future.

In any event, congratulations. My wife worked in the jewelry industry when we got married 26 years ago, and we got her a nice 1 carat stone that was about 1 month's takehome pay for me back then. When we could afford it, that stone went into a necklace and she got a big stone. Most of my friends started off with 1/4 carat or so, and many of them treasure those rings more than anything they could ever buy today.

Man. Guys really go the crap end of the deal there.

I say, look for the plainest, cheapest gold band with a simple but pretty cubic zirconia stone, and buy it. Just make sure that the gold is the kind that is so pure that it won't turn the skin green.

Or you could just use a fancy cigar band.

I know alot of women who never got an engagement ring, and wear only a simple gold wedding band (no stone). Nothing wroong with that at all.

Depend on how comfortable are you financially

All my friends who are engaged spend about $3,000 on their rings, but they are all college graduate professionals like engineers, accountants, etc…

My cousin (still in college) just proposed to his girlfriend with a $900 ring…

Two of my friends who are doctors proposed to their fiances with a $5000 and $10,000 ring (the $10K one is a specialist so he makes good money)

My co-worker is also an accountant but his ring is only $1500 because both him & his wife have lots of student debts when they graduated college…

You get the picture, there's no right number for everyone, just depend on how much you can afford and whether it's the ring she likes. I would rather get a nice looking but cheaper ring then an expensive ring of a design I don't care for.

Tradition says it should be 2-months salary. But realistically make it the ring that she wants, the cut of diamond she wants, the color gold she wants. This is something she will wear every day until she dies, make it special. You can always upgrade the diamond on the 10-year anniversary. So stay within your own budget, but make it something you know she'll love.

my hubby only spent about $800 on my whole ring set (engagement and wedding band). which i've been told is cheap. but he was (and we still are) in a tight financial situation. and anyway, i honestly don't care how much it was, it's still beautiful and the meaning of it is so much more important than the price tag.

Dollar amount is not what is important. Find a pretty ring your girl will like and get that one for her.

They say you should spend whatever is 2 months' worth of your salary. Of course, "they" is the diamond industry, so.... Just so long as you know she'll like it, that's what matters.

Depending on your budget! Also, it's not how much you spend on it, it's what comes from the heart!
