You mean a third world war? We're in the first throes of it. Remember that the first two were not solely instigated by one or two huge flashy effects and heinous crimes of epic proportions. Each one had a small scale political crisis that started a snowball effect that eventually amount one or more of the catalysts for each World War. Step one: The USA hiring Saddam in Iraq, and turning a blind eye to the inhumane crimes he committed and arming him with WMOD's and helping him build his own. Step Two: Saddam getting greedy, and overzealous and attempting to assassinate George Bush, Sr. Step Three: The WTC attacks giving Bush and the rest of the world an excuse to invade Afghanistan. Step Four: The USA turning around and using those attacks and the collective Western society's hatred and prejudice toward Muslim people as an excuse to falsify evidence that Iraq, and more specifically Hussein had something to do with 9/11. Step Five: The USA invading Iraq, agitating a civil war, and aiding it (the civil war, not the country of Iraq or it's people) in every way possible, to ensure prolonged occupation of the country. Step Six: to be continued....

WW III will involve China, the European Union, and a few stragglers within the EU who don't want to be fully associated with it, and for a brief period, the USA. Partway through WW3 however America will collapse into itself, and be destroyed by it's own lust for power. America will no longer exist and out of the rubble of the broken American nation will rise guerrillas and quasi-political forces that will complicate things for the rest of the world.

Ignoring the lunatic ravings of the prior answers, that's a difficult question answer. If things keep going as they are, the answer is that there will never be another world war. Things can always change, though.

First, let's talk definitions. A World War is a high-intensity decisive conflict invlving at least two global superpowers. That takes the skirmish in Iraq and the War on Terror right out of the running.

If there were to be another World War, who would be the beligerants? It would be hard to envision it not involving the U.S., but who would be the other? Russia is in no state to conduct a war, as its military is in a sorry state and it's fighting it's own domestic war in Cechnya. Yesterday's superpowers, Japan, German, the U.K., and France are shadows of their former selves and almost fanatically pacifist after the horrors of WWII.

The most likely emerging power is China, but they are already surrounded by countries with which they have poor relations, and besides a large land army, they lack the sophistication and logistical power to even invade Taiwan. Of course, this could change, but historically China has never been an expansionistic state.

The number one reason that a world war is increasingly unlikely is that international trade breeds interdependence. China and the U.S. both depend on their trade with each other and would not be willing to risk that.

Before WWII, international trade was a fraction of what it is today. In those days, it coudl benefit you to invade your neighbor and take its resources. These days you can just buy it.

It's difficult to envision a scenario in which any of the major powers woulf go to war with each other today, because each has much more to lose than to gain from war. The only wild card would be the emergence of an irrational, aggressive ideology in a world power, such as if Russia was suddenly taken over by Islamic fascists. That scenario, improbable as it is, is the ony likely way we will again find ourselves in a world war.

Have you heard of the Yom Kippur war in 1973, Israel vs a coalition of Arab nations....Egypt, Syria and Jordan. That was worse than the current situation.....it didn't raise a blip on the world war scenario (not that it didn't have the potention as a spark)...just relegated to the heap of regional conflicts between rump states.

When the strategic super powers square off into two camps, then come back and we'll talk world war three.

Until then, just think regional conflicts, proxy wars, sabre rattling and brinksmanship.... After the next world war, we'll be back into the stone age and you won't have to worry whether a world war occurred or not. Your first inkling that the BIG ONE has started will be when your video game or TV goes out from that initial EMP burst.

The mostly likely scenario will be an accidental launch by the Russians thinking that NATO or the US launched against them. Their aging command and control systems are the bulls in the glass shop, not the threat from NorKor or Iran.

We have been in world war III sonce November 1979 and the Tehran Islamic Student Uprising. The Deposition of The Shah if Iran which resulted in the End of the Persian Monarchy brought about REAL Threats to the world. FORGET Iraq. FORGET Afghanistan. Shah Mohammed Reza Pahlavi , last King of Iran though not a firm ally of the United Sttaes MOST ASSUREDLY did not hate The Untied States as badly as Khomeni did and now Ahmedinijab do. IN 1975 we had just been decimated after a 30 year war in VIetnam, YES THIRTY YEARS, this Iran thing caught us TOTALLY OFF GUARD. and ws the real beginning of World War III, FOrget 911 AS THE BEGINNING OF WW III. It has been going on long before 911

Its called the Global War on Terror.
Its been going on (with active participation on our part) since a few weeks after 9/11 when we invaded Afghanistan.
It was one-sided for years and years before that when our embassy in Iran was taken, when the terrorists attacked us in Lebanon, when WTC was hit the first time, the embassies in Africa got hit, the USS Cole was hit, etc etc etc...

were getting kidna close to it, but if we're careful we can avoid it..
the entire world is starting to become extremely tied together economically, so either we escape a global conflict or this time it will truly be a world war and involve the entire world as a battlefield
