It used to fairly common for drs to suggest removing the tonsils but thats changed now. My son suffered severely with his missing a lot of school with repeated infections and permanently red and enlarged tonsils. this went on for over a year before my gp referred him to an ear nose and throst specialist. he was also found to have slight glue ear on one side which they treated but his tonsils were left. They were eventually removed urgently when the specialist became concerned that he has swollen lymph nodes in his neck which meant the tonsils could possibly be malignant! Thankfully they werent and their removal was the end of his throat problems..he was 7. Most drs today are unwilling to remove tonsils unless its really really needed.
