I have my own midnight mass at my house. But I can't say what goes on there. It's kind of carnal.

The Mass is the remembrance of the Last Supper, when Christ gave us his body & blood. The congragation can receive holy communion, which is s symbol of this. Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve is generally a more elaborate Mass than the normal service. There are more priests on the altar, often there will be a carol recital before the Mass & carols during the service. Somethimes at the beginning of the Mass a priest will carry a statue of baby Jesus to the manger in the crib. The gospel of the Mass tells the story of Christ's birth & the whole service is a celebration of that event. I am a little disapointed at many of the previous answers - many Catholics still take the Mass seriously & Midnight Mass on Christmas Eve is one of the most special Masses of the year.

I'm not Catholic but I went to mass in Ireland. We spent the evening jammed in the pub with the whole village, then at midnight everyone trooped out & over the road to the church, where the beer fumes mixed with the incense and everyone shook hands and had a right laugh. I've no idea if every mass in Ireland is like that, it was the only one I've been to.

it is a regular service held at mid night, the main thing is that it is longer as the priest and congreagation read the nativity story and so the gospel is a little more prolonged. the emphasis is celebrating the birth of our savior jesus. this pertains to the catholic church,i am not sure about other churches. go check out the catholic celebration it is pretty cool.

It's great!!!
There's elephants and horses and clowns and music and popcorn and cotton candy and lots and lots of elvis impersonators.
Everybody gets lots of money to take home with them, and if you have any speeding tickets on your record, you can get them taken off on that night.
Oh, and if you go, don't forget to take a pineapple and a garden hose....trust me, you'll need them.

Same as any other mass.

With maybe a few more carols.

And LOADS of people straight out the pub.

I rather like it!

Yawn. Nothing much. The church makes a big deal out of it and the kids love it because they are "out past bedtime!"
