It's called a Turbo Scratcher, a circle of replacable cardboard with a ball that rolls around the outside. She loves playing with the ball, and all of the other cats I know love the toy and all of them know to scratch it. How can I get mine to?

Sprinkle catnip on it.

Turbo scratchers are fun, but if she's scratching the furniture... she's probably going to continue until you get her a scratch post that is vertical. The turbo scratcher is not going to let her stretch the way a traditional scratch post (or your furniture) does. Get a nice TALL post... one where she can stretch as far as her body can possibly go (at least 3ft for most cats). Building it is your best bet, as the stores typically sell ones that appeal more to people than they do to cats. A 4x4 post wrapped with sisal rope and/or carpet, mounted to a nice sized plywood base is all you need. Make sure it's not easy to tip over.

Since the turbo scratcher scoots around on the floor, and allows her to stretch only horizontally, she probably won't be terribly interested in using it as an alternative to furniture. If you want more info about good posts, feel free to email me. I've made many for my cats and can help you choose a good one even if you're going to buy it. :) Good luck.

Catnip works well. I have one of those Turbo Scratchers too. However, I had better luck training the cats on one of the cheaper cardboard, rectangular scratch posts. Most cats, for whatever reason, seem to almost instinctively use them.

I placed a link below of what one looks like.

Try rubbing her paws on the scratcher and telling her, "Good kitty," or whatever you call her. Speak to her in a calm, low tone. Also, pet her when you put her paws on the scratcher; maybe give her a kitty snack.

If those ideas don't work (more of a dog way to train), rub some cat nip on the scratcher. That's sure-fire to get her attention off of the couch, at least for a little while.

Every cat I have ever had has loved that toy! When they are excited and playing I would move them on top of it and gently push their paws into the cardboard so they could feel their claws dig in...then for when they grab furniture I would pick them up and put them on their scratcher instead. They learn really quickly so don't worry!

You can get some spray at the pet shop to discourage her from other areas. You can hang a catnip toy on the scratcher to encourage her to use the new post.

Cover the cat scratcher with cat nip and then spray the furniture with an apple flavored no scratch spray that you can find at petsmart.

Get some cat nip spray and put it on the things she's allowed to play with. Or just spray her with a squirt bottle any time she scrathes the couch and praise her and give her treats when she uses the post. But, most likley, she'll continue with the furniture, as cats are very disobedient that way.

Put the scratcher near the couch and sprinkle some catnip over it.

show her how to use her claws on the post, use catnip or spray or put a kitty treat on it - praise her when she pays attention to it - if a repeated "no" doesn't work, and you have a leather couch which cost more than the cat lol, swat her with a lightly rolled sheet of newspaper - the noise should scare her away from the couch and into the next millennium...
