If it has been refrigerated since soon after purchase, then long after the expiration. If it's been in a warm area, then not much past the expiration date.

I always know the moment someone gives me an expired soda (especially Cola). While it's not dangerous and won't make you sick, some ingredients chemically break down and ends up giving the scent and taste of shavings from a pencil sharpener (not that I have tasted that, but I have smelled it). I don't think it has to do with the carbonation because Seltzer and Club Soda are not effected. I don't think it has to do with the sugar, because it also happens to diet soda. It's something with the flavorings.

I tell my friend after sipping, "This soda is expired" and they say "Soda doesn't expire" . Then I say "Check the expiration date", then they reply "OMG, you're right! I never knew that!"

Edit-To all the people whose answers are pertaining to "flat" soda, I don't think this has much to do with the expiration date. Soda stays carbonated in a can well past the expiration date. It's the flavor that changes!

It won't be as fresh, but it's safe to drink for a long time since it's in a sealed can it won't go bad. It will start to lose the fizz, though.

I'm not sure if it ever really goes bad, but the carbonation would go out of it and it would become flat. Also over time the sugar may start to ferment which would make it go bad and possibly make you sick, but again not sure on how long that would take.

It doesn't go bad for a while but I would not want to drink it more than a couple of months past the date on the can

That's the best by date - you can drink it without getting ill, but it won't taste as good. I usually throw them out.

The pop will start to lose its fizz and go flat, as long as it still has alot of fizz to it, it will be ok, usually a couple months after the date.

It WON'T lose the fizz and it WON'T go flat... people are just making crap up.

It WILL taste bad, however... so throw it out.
