I agree with Anya and Soccergurl. In prison, you can get your dental taken care of, get the medical attention you may need, be well fed, you have a multitude of ways to better yourself, all on our dime. And I saw another reason in one of the answers; it's like a rite of passage for some gangs, and a status symbol for criminals.
Maybe we should pass a law that they have to read R & S 16 hrs a day, or is that cruel and unusual punishment?

well, if they're homeless and have no place to go, and in jail they have a good place to sleep and get fed, why wouldn't they?

There are those who do. They get free shelter, food, medical care, and do not have to do much of anything in return.

i blame rap music for that one.in those rap songs they make it cool to commit crime and go to jail.
