Stupid people are drawn to a lot of things, including a simplistic, black and white religion.
Of course, some of the most intelligent, wise people are drawn to religion too. These people seek to become kinder, more compassionate people through religious practice.
I think you are making the same mistake many conservative Christians make: to generalize in a negative manner about literally billions of people around the world. I hope you will see the difference between a KKK Christian and a Saint Francis, a terrorist Muslim and a devoted Muslim...
Or, you can remain ignorant while writing shocking sentences about priests, etc.
(or to use your approach, are ego-driven, disrespectful morons the only ones attracted to atheism? or is it just you?)

You pointed out a lot. And they are very real and serious problems. But what also needs to be pointed out are the two 18 year old that professed to be atheist and regulars on some part of Yahoo answers who laid in wait for someone to rob and killed a man on the street they had never met two weeks ago...their statemeant in court was "what was he a wimp, we only stabbed him once, a real man would not have died." And the high school students who went around town tearing down and destroying any thing that had to do with a religious Christmas stating they should not have to look at such things...even though they were in private homes.....$25000 in damage to houses, property and cars in 1 weekend....so in my view the stupid remark goes both ways and is giving all of us both ways a very bad name....
The main point to be made here....most of what is said on here is ment to be entertaining.....but some are taking it to heart and acting out....it is a sad part of our society that there is really a large amount of mental illness and self centeredness.

There is always an extremist element to any faith or organization. But that does not mean that the extremists represent the vast majority of like-minded people within their community of faith. But your point is well taken, as the extremist elements seem to have achieved less academic studies then the more passive elements which tend to be non-judgmental and non-violent.

If religion drives people to do evil acts, then a) how do you determine what is "evil" and b) explain how atheists commit horrific acts (the purges of the atheistic communist nations comes to mind)?
The common link is not religion or religious zeal, it is humanity. We as humans are, by our nature, brutish, self serving, and narcissistic. Or as we Christians call it, "sinful". The fact that some people wrap their beastliness in religious garb does not suprise me, nor should it suprise you.

Both. To believe in god you need blind faith and so believing in god makes you stupid. Also if you are drawn to religion generally you don't have a very good understanding of science and so you start off stupid and get stupider. Until you believe the Earth is 6,002 years old and people who look at fossils will be punished by your benevolent super being to an eternity of painful fire. Say no to jesus

Yep, I totally agree, theocracies are horrible for any society. Hillbilly nation and the middle east are very exposing examples of the harm it does.

Religion appeals to different people for different reasons. I know many intelligent, well-educated people who are religious as well as many intelligent, well-educated people who, like me, are not. That said, I think religions tend to encourage their followers to mistrust or be suspicious of those who are not "of the flock." Unfortunately, some take this to extremes and try to eradicate those who make them uncomfortable.

humans are "stupid" in nature. religion is just one of the millions of excuses people have to kill each other. the word "stupid" is also a very general description and, judging by your using it in an completely biased and rhetorical question, you seem like a truly "stupid" person to me.

Why are there representatives from every intellectual capability here on this page? Does your presence here on this page constitute an indictment of your intelligence? Is it a sign of intelligence to be profane?
