ok now that i understand the problem, here's what i think:
i think they should be entitled with the rights they're claiming! plz read the rest before u judge what i just said
Allah -subhanu we taala- said in suret "el kaferoun": "lakom deenokom, wa leya deen" .. which means YOU have YOUR religion, I have MINE! we da fe souret el KAFEROUN!!! not the christians or the jews, no, kaferoun! which are ones who have NO GOD or have statues as Gods.. i personally dont recognize baha2eyeen as a religion, but they're ppl! let's assume they're kafara!! shouldnt they be entitled to have their CIVIL rights like GOD said in the QURAN??

thats my opinion.. what do u think??

and no body, article 2 of the constitution states that islam is "el masdar el ra2isi lel tashree3" .. it doesnt mention it as a religion nor does it say anything abt christians and jews.. but the rest of ur answer helped me understand the matter..

1- Bahai is an international religion spread throughout the world. Its followers are estimated by few millions. It is said to have originated in the 18th century by someone called BahoAllah.
For more information on Bahai religion visit this site:
www.bahai.com
2- There are some Bahai followers in Egypt. Their "estimated " numbers are about 2000. Ofcourse you know that data in Egypt is never accurate. So they may be more or less.
3- Their problem in Egypt is as follows:
a- There are only 3 official religions in Egypt" Islam , Christianity and Jeudism" .This is according to article 2 in the constitution.
b- The Bahais want the government to recognize their religion.
c- They have been fighting in courts for some of their rights. For example, they want the "religion" section in the Nationa ID to include "Bahai". This is not possible according to the law. What happens now is that this section is left clear, or "Muslim" is written under it. Which is not true ofcourse. Another thing concerning this point, if you rember a few months ago, the high school student who refused to answer the religion test because it was for Muslims and she was Bahai.
d- As I said , they have been fighting in courts for many years. Some times the courts issue them a verdict in their favour. So the public attorney appeals. Sometimes the verdict is not in their favour, so they appeal. The latest verdict was issued by the Higher Administrative Court that they CAN NOT include their religion in the religion sections.
f - If we leave aside the legislative part. There are two points of view regarding this issue :
The first is : Egypt is a Muslim country , and we as Muslim recognize only 3 religions . Islam, Christianity and Jeudism. So the Bahais shouldn't be given the right to have any mention to their religion on the National ID card.
The second is : One of the most important foundations of a free and democratic nation is freedom of speech and freedom of religius practice. Some people believe that Bahais should be granted this simple right of having their religion recognized. Because we live in a free country after all.
It is up to every free Egyptian individual to decide hislher free point of view regarding this situation.

Addition:
What you said is totally right. Islam is the main source of legislation. This means that Egypt is an Islamic country. As an Islamic country, Egypt recognizes only the 3 main religions approved by Islam, "Jeudism, Christianity and Islam"
In order to understand this, compare our constitution to other countries that take "secularism" as its system of belief. You'll find that religion is not mentioned in the first place. Which avoids the whole problem of mentioning "religion" in the religion section in the National ID.
Got it ?

They want their religion to be identified in the ID.
You know that there's nothing can be done without papers (ID, birth certificate, etc..) so basically they want their life to move on (and their children) and they want at the same time to write the religion they believe in, in the ID.
I don't know much about the religion itself, but i think they are like many other group of people who took advantage of the weak government and tried to take its rights (or what they believe their rights) like the judges, journalists, workers syndicates in Mahalla ,and many more.
They lost the case; they can't write down "Bahai" in religion, but they can write "other" under the religion checkbox!
