I am thinking about going to college and starting off as an officer or I'll continue to live as a civilian. Please be descriptive and compare the two services to each other and civilian life. And tell me which service is best for someone who wants to be an aerospace engineer or physicist, which service travels the world more often, which one promotes faster(I want to make admiral/general someday), an if you have been in one of the two describe what the experience.

Could you also tell me which allows someone to become a pilot and which service's pilot's are chosen to be astronauts.

I'm a Marine.

You don't join the Marines for the opportunity to advance your science career, or money for college, or bonuses, or jobs. You do it because you want to be a Marine. You do it for Pride. You do it for Honor, Courage, and Commitment. If those aren't your reasons, don't do it, because you will hate it if that is not what you are looking for, and I dont need Marines in the Marine Corps that don't want to be here.

Now, those may be some of your reasons, you just didnt mention them in your question. If that is the case, I will address a few areas:

Marines travel every where, if you want to go there, we can put you there. We go to every major country in the world. We have embassies there, and we are the ones that guard them.

Promotions- the Marines' system is competitive, it relies more on your studies, your physical strength, your conduct, and your ambition. The Navy's is a test, and they only promote so many. I know Corpsman (Marines don't have medics, we use the Navy's and call them Corpsman) who have been E-5's for 10 years or more and can't get promoted, but people who enlist with a degree in nursing or prior training automatically get E-6. It isnt really fair in my opinion. The Marines' system is good though.

As for becoming a pilot, both have pilot programs, but I know alot of astronauts are Marines.

As for science and engineering, that is the Navy's job. They do the math, we do the killing.

I love the Corps. i have always enjoyed it and always will. But just so you know, it is not easy, it is difficult and never gets any easier. While the Navy sleeps in or doesnt exercise, We get up early and run 5 miles. While they sit on a ship and take it easy, we are on the ground in the middle of the desert doing our jobs at all hours. Nothing against them, especially when you hear one of those cruise missles going over your head. I'm just saying, its not all pretty uniforms and pretty ladies in the Marines. Its alot of blood and guts and sweat and tears.

Its up to you, sounds like you'll do fine either way you go.

I'm not really familiar with the Navy as much as the Marines. I will be joining the Coast Guard here soon, so that will change. For what I know for the Marines(almost joined) , they don't really have aerospace engineer or physicist. Marines are more "get the job done" kind of service. They do have pilots but I know that Navy does also, what the difference is...I don't really know. One of my friends is in the Navy and he becoming a medic. They offer great school benefits where the Marines don't really have any. In the Marines, when you are done training, you will have a choice of either going to school or just staying in your barrack. They don't offer benefits. If you join the Marines, you will 100% go to Iraq, for at least a year maybe two. Than who knows, you will see the world that is for a fact, but that depends on what your field is. The ones you were looking into, Marines do not have. Hope I helped out a little bit. ALso, go to recruiters and just ask questions, don't give info or sign anything. A web-site to visit that might be helpful is www.military.com

recruits who want to be marines arent different than recruits from any other branch. its just a bunch of kids who want to join the military, they havent proven or done anything above and beyond. there is no "extra step" to becoming a marine, they are all 1 time volunteers just like most soldiers, squids, and blue berries. hardest-working depends on MOS, not branch. an airforce PJ has much harder work than a marine cook. rape in the military is less common than rape in the civilian world the army promotes the fastest to e-4. after that (and e-3 for the other branches), promotions are based off of whats available. some MOSs in the marines promote faster than some MOSs in the army. the marines are known for shopping at the army's garage sale. money is the same for all branches, it really depends on what type of living conditions you have. if you have pretty much an apartment to yourself its pretty good, if you're sharing a crappy 12x12 room with 3 other guys it sucks. my advice: figure out what job you want to do and go from there. there are no medics in the marines, there are no f-18 mechanics in the army. what MOS you have dictates more of what you'll do than what branch you're in. again, lazyness depends on MOS. you wont find a "lazy" atmosphere with infantry no matter where you are, you wont find any genuinely hard core truck drivers.

My eldest son joined the Marine Corps without his Dad and my knowledge. College wasn't for him. At first I was sad as he went to Viet Nam. He left an innocent kid and came home a man, to this day I am so proud of him. He is disciplined, productive, makes a good living, has a lovely home. The Marine Corps taught him their way, but their way saved his life, I think its connected with the Navy, no? don't tell either one that though, I would say either is good. Good luck
