When you're ready to start tournament play, check with your golf pro (because the system is slightly different in different places). You should register in some local tournaments to begin with -- all beginners get the same handicap -- and once you get some registered scores, your handicap will be adjusted and get less as you get better.
Good luck out there!

To get a ruff handicap record your last 10 times you played a full round, then take your average of how many strokes under or over par ie. last 10 rounds your record +2, +1, 0, -1, +2, +4, -1, 0, +1, +1 your average is +1 so your handicap would be 1. But in reality it takes a lot more that just an average, it also includes the slope of the course and im not sure how it fits into the calculations

my boyfriend plays with a group that has handicaps.
it varies, but in their group you must have at least 5 scores (have played and recorded your score on 18 holes 5 times) and then your handicap is calculated. other groups may require different amounts of recorded scores to establish a handicap. and of course the handicap is constantly recalculated so it gets lower as you become a better golfer. or if you get worse it gets higher. because your latest games are going to be counted in there...
i think they do it on the last 5 games. but sometimes they may "throw out" the highest or lowest or do a weighted average.
you have to keep track of your scores and compare them to par.

Join a Golf Club
Record at least 5 scores at the club . If a nine hole course then the number they give you needs to be doubled. The Club pro can give you more information on the process. Or you can Join the PGAtour partners club and record scores from different courses on their gametracker feature.
