If the children are over 8 or 10 (depending on maturiy) give them the jobs of feeding and walking him. It would be wonderful if they could take him to obedience classes, as the dog learns to love and respect the ones that teach them the most..

I have known a few Jack Russells and they have all been the same, however, after some training thier behaviour can be improved. You have to treat them like they are the bottom of the pack (the subordinate) So, dont let it on the chairs, beds or into the room you sleep in. Feed it after you have eaten your food and dont feed it food you have eaten yourself. Give him fuss when you want to, not when he asks for it. I know this sounds a little harsh but he may be young enough to turn around yet but be consistent. The dog is seeing you as his possession not as being the pack leader as he should.

start training asap. Pay particular attention to dominance training. Stop making such a fuss of him, do not allow him to sit near you, stop petting him and make him EARN any attention from you by good behaviour. At present he thinks he is in charge and nobody is allowed near you because HE is the boss. If you don't get on top of this ASAP your dog will end up losing his life because you would not take charge. Once he gets to the stage where he bites someone, or bites your children, he will be a dangerous dog.
If you distance yourself from him, and make sure that other members of the family become his prime carers, giving him treats and giving him a fuss, walking and training him, he will learn but ultimately it has to be you being the strong pack leader and teaching him that other humans, including children, are way above him in the grand scheme of things. If you cannot or will not then I fele very sorry for this poor confused and insecure pup as his life will be a stressful and short one :0(

You need to not laugh at this behavior, or allow the dog to act in this way. If the dog is near you and it does it scold him and do not give him praise, as in pet him after scolding, or letting him near you. Practice many times a day with your kids until it stops. You must control your dog and be strong enough not to let your kids get into harms way. As for strangers, find some friends that can help. Ask them to walk by and when the dog attacks, you must scold the dog, have the person stand and wait, not getting scared, do not let them react to the dogs attack in fear! You need to train the dog it is not OK, but the dog must also see that it is not intimidating others, once you can do this with ease the next strange person to come by will be much easier.

you have to treat him as he is the bottom of the pack , at the moment the puppy thinks he is the boss you just have to show it that you are the boss and the other are as well, when he realizes that he is not the dominant one he will stop this behavior. what he is doing at the moment is trying to find his place in the pack and the more he gets away with , the more he thinks he is getting to the top. you do not have to be hard on him jut put two finger in his neck area and hold him down when he miss behaves he will struggle but keep him there till he stops eventually he will realize that he has to do as he is told some time you have to be hard on him but this work now will benefit you in the future

Obedience school or ask you vet for a referral to a Dog Behavioral Specialist. There is more going on here than the growling.

A Jack Russell is the same as many breeds of dogs who are territorial, even the tiny chihua is one of them.
They are alpha dogs, and would establish themselves as masters and defenders of a teritory if you let them.
The worst I have met are the sweetest ones. They have to dominate and protect the roost when you exhibit signs of being vulnerable or weak.
They weill surrender this function back to you but you have to continually assert your dominance. When that happens, believe me, they will happily just give it back to you.
Observe how the alpha dog will discourage the beta dog from picking on the rest of the pack. That is how you will regain your lost authority on your household.

I had a Jack Russell who was exactly the same. They are very territorial i'm afraid. Unfortunatley i couldn't change his behaviour. He was a rescue dog so i do'nt know what his history was. Alas for the sake of the kids i had to let him go.
I'm sure if i seeked professional help it may have been different but i ran out of patience

I used to own a lovely Jack Russel *****, who wouldnt harm a fly, BUT always chased people and growled a lot.
In 15 years of having her she never altered, it seems that maybe this is the way they are.
Just try to learn her NO, it isnt good to chase bark or bite at people.
Best of luck,
PS, Love her for this is the breed.
Last hope a dog expert may have some helping tips,

Dump the dog. I know people that have them. They are sporadic with their attitudes. They are either passive or aggressive. You got an aggressive one. They are difficult to deal with when they are aggressive this young. You are better off getting another of the opposite sex. This is a tough decision but I dought with all the training the dog will chill out. This is just my opinion, good luck.
