I am unfamiliar with Illinois sales tax, and need help preparing this form for a gas station. I don't understand how gasoline is taxed and that is really throwing me for a loop. IDR website is of no help. If I had an example to follow I know I would be fine, but can't find anything online. I need to know what sort of sales are taxable and non taxable, as well as how to figure in gas sales on the return. I am lost! HELP!

Your best bet is to call the Illinois Dept. of Revenue and ask to speak to someone to actually help you file the ST-1. You can also ask where a local tax office is located so, if needed, you can go directly to the office for help.

If you all them now and set up an appointment before the week of January 15. You have a much greater chance to have an auditor in the office because they will not be going out on audits. Plus, if you have an auditor help you through this, then the chances of you having your records straight during the next possilbe audit will be greater.

It may sound crazy. But, all states would prefer vouluntary compliance rather than do audits.
