At three weeks I wouldn't give him anything but formula and water. Give your pediatrician a quick call, there office would know best.

I am including with my answer a more comprehensive answer from a knowlegeable pediatrician's website.
Yes apple juice twice a day will help him, and if this doesnt workm go for some dilute prune juice.
Stool that is hard (firmer than peanut butter) or foul smelling (you'll know) in a child who has not yet had solid foods may represent something as simple as needing more to drink (especially during hot weather), but it may also be the sign of a disease. Contact your pediatrician to discuss the situation. If the baby is otherwise healthy, one teaspoon of light *Karo syrup in 4 ounces of water will often get things back on track.

I had the same problem with my daughter when she was a newborn until she was over one year old. The first thing, obviously, is to talk to your doctor for advice. However, the problem may be what you are eating, if you are breastfeeding, or the formula you are using. If you are breastfeeding, try adding more fiber into your diet. If you are using formula, you may need to switch to a soy formula, because your baby may have an intolerance to lactose. I had to switch to soy formula for my daughter, but that still didn't completely solve the problem. I did try 1/2 oz. of apple juice mixed with 1/2 oz. of water, as suggested by my doctor. This helped a little, but I eventually did have to go to using suppositories. It is not pleasant, but it works for babies that are in pain. I also know that a lot of people try a little bit of castor oil also. This worked really well for a little girl I used to babsit, but beware: it has a nasty taste, so mix it with formula or water. It also makes some people throw up, so this may be a last resort. Good luck!

When my son was a few weeks old the doctor told use to get a little prune juice and dilute it with water, but only if it really seemed to be bothering him. Another good thing is sit him on your lap (his back to your stomach) and when he starts straining hold his knees to his chest(gentley of course) to help move the poop. Also you can massage his little tummy too! Hope this helps

After attempting quite a few diverse formulation, we got here upon one that worked. in spite of the shown fact that, our 3 month previous is constipated. The surgeon reported it replaced into okay to grant a million/2 oz..water blended with a million/2 prune juice in the past his morning bottle. it quite is through fact he would be hungry interior the morning and nonetheless drink sufficient milk to get nutrients. She reported if it works "to nicely" to do an entire of a million/2 oz..of the mixture. We use the sunsweet prune juice, which is composed of in basic terms prunes and water.

Your son is probably not constipated. Is he strictly breast fed? If so He could not have a bowl movement for days. Even if he's bottle fed he won't be going regularly. DO NOT GIVE HIM ANY JUICE. And call your DR.

Should you? NO!
BTW if you are breastfeeding I guarantee he isn't constipated.
Also the only way to diagnose constipation is to actually SEE firm poop. Many babies to do not go for days and that is perfectly normal (4 days if formula fed, 7 days if breastfed). Their diet is liquid and some babies use it very efficiently and create almost no waste.
